image of God” (2 Cor 4:3–4).33 By contrast the gospel has been received by those in whose hearts God has shone “the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Cor 4:6). On the one hand, the objective “light,” the content of the gospel, is proclaimed clearly. On the other hand, it appears that a subjective “light,” an inward dispelling of the darkness of the human heart, also is needed for the reception of the gospel.34 In keeping with the necessity of the Spirit’s
